Maelor is a large club with an enthusiastic, fun-loving membership. There are 67 members on the books with a weekly turn out of 30 plus members ranging in age from 14 to 27.
The club holds a monthly club challenge evening with a cup awarded to the person racking up the most points throughout the year.
All that in-club competing stands members in good stead for county competitions and Maelor are currently Clwyd’s champion public speakers having been overall winners of the county’s 2008 public speaking competition. They went to Newtown to represent Clwyd in the drama competitions and next month hope to defend their title by scooping a second overall win at the Clwyd public speaking competition at Llysfasi College.
When not competing the kind-hearted club like nothing more than raising funds for worthy causes and last year raised a staggering Ł4,000 for charity.
In May four plucky lads built a pink four-man bike and cycled from Wrexham to Blackpool for the NFYFC AGM, collecting money along the way as well as getting sponsorship from friends and family. Stuart, Henry, James and PJ secured coverage in the local press and even got a mention on Radio 1 and raised an amazing Ł2,000 for Cancer Research.
In September the club held a special charity night with casino, auction, buffet and disco. Attractive prizes from the likes of Kylie Minogue, Freddie Flintoff, Alan Sugar and Dame Kelly Holmes helped bring in the cash, with the evening making an impressive Ł2,000 in total for Leukaemia Research.
Maelor love to socialise with other clubs and being on the Welsh border regularly interact with YFC members from Cl,wyd, Cheshire and Shropshire.
