Croeso i Langollen. Welcome to Llangollen. As a club, Llangollen are really pleased and grateful to Jonathon, his father Mr John Davies and the family at Abbey Farm for allowing the 2008 Rally to be held there. The association between YFC and the family goes back a long way with sisters Anne, Ennis, Gwyneth and little brother John all being long and loyal members of both the club and county, so it was nice for the rally to come to their home while Jonathon was chairman.
Last year’s rally saw Llangollen finish in second place. Everyone was really pleased at how well our new members had coped with all that had been thrown at them. They are not so new now and have got into our well-known YFC habits!
What a soaking summer we had last year; our Welly Wanging interclub night was finally held in July, when the rain stopped, followed by a very damp Royal Welsh, (if Beth Richards went home on the Monday, things must have been bad!) a cancelled Tug of War competition and a drippy Denbigh and Flint. Our spirits were not dampened though when we held the AGM in August and elected this year’s officials. In September some of us followed the Clwyd Tug Of War Teams (lads half from Llan and half from Northop and ladies from Uwchaled) down to Brecon Army Camp. They gave their amazing best and missed first place by one mark. The looks of disappointment on their faces said it all. You really did do well, but it didn’t feel like it on the way home, did it?
The county sports day at Denbigh High School saw a huge turn out from Llan. We didn’t win anything coming second in a few, but everyone had a really enjoyable afternoon which is what it’s all about.
Club events during the year have included a very hot paint-balling night, go-karting, a killer pool competition and a pancake devouring session. Two of our best evenings have been a talk by Mr Ken Butterfield who is a sign language teacher and interpreter. Ken is an old friend of the club and raised awareness of deaf issues, teaching us all to finger spell our names before he finished. The second was an evening with Katie Scarlett Howard a clay artist employed by the county council under the Helfa Gelf project to take art to youth groups. We all made and decorated clay heads which was a really good laugh and something that far more members than we expected were up for.
We got good use from our dickie-bows and party dresses last year when most members went to Gwynfryn’s Presdient’s Ball, our Christmas bash in the Wild Pheasant, we supported the RWAS fund raising Masked Ball around New Year and helped with the Easter Ball in Brymbo, taking a bus-full along. It’s any excuse to dress up with us lot.
Fundraising last year was mostly aimed at the Cancer Research Relay event and carol singing proceeds of some £200 were split between the Wales YFC Hospice charities. Two new things we did in the year were to put a float called “Winter Wonderland” into the town’s christmas parade (when it rained the white painted snowmen had tears all down their bodies where their blue painted eyes ran) and in February members did a Sunday morning “Muck Chuck” to the local allotments raising £160 for club funds.
